Trancing on a Boat

In Luke 8, the scene is a boat in a cray storm, the disciples entering Def Con 5 freak out mode, and Jesus fast asleep.

I've always wondered if Jesus was a heavy sleeper. I am a light sleeper. When dust falls on my nightstand, I am startled by the noises. How is Jesus sleeping not only in a storm, but also getting wet due to the design of these kinds of boats. Imagine the Disneyland jungle cruise and you get the idea.

Luke uses an interesting word for sleep and it is only used this one time. It is the Greek word "aphypnoo" and it comes from two other root words. The first being "apo" which means: "the separation of a part from the whole." The second word is "hypnos" which is where we get the word "hypnotised" from. This is a sleep-state. It also means "spiritual torpor" which is a "state of suspended physical powers and activities."

I would suggest Jesus was in full on trance-mode as He was fully drenched in the Father. A true time out. When He comes out of this state, He releases peace and the storm stops.

Jesus was in a place of true ascension and trans-dimensionality, unaware of any storm nor even of His physical body having water splash all over Him. He was overwhelmingly swallowed up in the Father's love and embrace. Intoxicated in the ecstasy of acceptance.

Jonah was swallowed up by a fish for going in the wrong direction. Jesus was swallowed up by His Father's love when going in the right direction.
